چکیده

We consider the revision of a previously derived theoretical framework for the robustness of multi-channel sound equalization in reverberant environments when non-exact equalizers are used. Using results from image model simulations, we demonstrate the degradation in performance of an equalization system as the sound source moves from its nominal position inside the enclosure. We show that performance can be controlled to vary between a lower bound, derived when direct-path equalization is used, and a higher one produced when exact equalization is used.

On the poor robustness of sound equalization in reverberant environments

This paper examines the sensitivity of sound equalization to source or microphone position changes in a reverberant room. It is demonstrated that even small displacements from the reference (equalization) point, of the order of a tenth of the acoustic wavelength, can cause large degradations in the equalized room response. The general theory developed in this paper, which implies that the sound...

A DFE coefficient placement algorithm for sparse reverberant channels

We develop an automated algorithm for determining the number and sparsely supported locations of coefficients in a multi-element array decision-feedback equalizer based on an estimated channel response. We aim for robustness to a wide variety of possible channel conditions, especially through taking advantage of the interplay between the MMSE-optimal feedforward and feedback filters.

Increasing the Robustness of Acoustic Multichannel Equalization by Means of Regularization

The performance of acoustic multichannel equalization techniques, which are based on estimating and inverting the room impulse responses (RIRs) between the source and the microphone array, is known to be very sensitive to estimation errors of the RIRs. In order to increase the robustness, it has been proposed to use regularization with the aim of decreasing the energy of the inverse filters. Th...

Improving the conditioning of the optimization criterion in acoustic multi-channel equalization using shorter reshaping filters

In acoustic multi-channel equalization techniques, such as complete multi-channel equalization based on the multiple-input/output inverse theorem (MINT), relaxed multi-channel least-squares (RMCLS), and partial multi-channel equalization based on MINT (PMINT), the length of the reshaping filters is generally chosen such that perfect dereverberation can be achieved for perfectly estimated room i...

Instrumental and Perceptual Evaluation of Dereverberation Techniques Based on Robust Acoustic Multichannel Equalization

Dereverberation techniques based on acoustic multichannel equalization, such as the relaxed multichannel least squares (RMCLS) technique and the partial multichannel equalization technique based on the multiple-input/output inverse theorem (PMINT), are known to be sensitive to room impulse response perturbations. In order to increase their robustness, several methods have been proposed, e.g., u...
